MGA LIKHA NI BATHALA

Mixed Media Drawing on Paper (Coloured Pencils, Markers & Acrylic Paint) | ~22” x 30” | 2023

Mga Likha Ni Bathala (God’s Creations in Tagalog) is a series of drawings that revolves around gods and dieties in precolonial Philippine folklore and mythology, containing traditional and fantasy elements incorporated with pop culture and contemporary editorial fashion. The series aims to empower different identities and sexualities given the open interpretation of several Filipino mythological characters that have been erased during colonialization and history. Through mythology, I discuss my longing of my culture and I aim to empower prejudiced communities. Each piece contains a cutout drawing of the god or goddess with another cutout drawing/painting in the background that tells their identity and character. Ultimately, my figures are to be seen as sacred, well adorned, powerful, confident and fierce in terms of bodily posture.
