I create an archetype of a mermaid or siren to evoke a whimsical and alluring visualization of my childhood memory of going to the beach in the Philippines while incorporating fashion influences from Beyonce’s Robert Cavalli outfit for her Renaissance Tour in 2023, Vesace’s SS21 collection, to XTina’s Y2K hairstyle. My work is inspired by stories of mermaids and aquatic creatures often shown in Philippine media as I create a character that is celebrated with her brown complexion.
